Automated Transformer Lamination Stacking | Rex Power Magnetics
Project Overview
As project lead, I managed a team of three students to automate the stacking of transformer steel laminations for Rex Power Magnetics. I acted as the primary point of contact with the industry partner, ensuring requirements were met and solutions aligned with real-world manufacturing constraints. The project eliminated manual handling risks while creating a repeatable, reliable process.
The Challenge
Manual stacking of transformer laminations was inconsistent, time-consuming, and posed safety risks due to variations in size, weight, and rigidity.
Approach
Directed end-to-end project execution, including student mentorship, design of a custom magnetic gripper with cushion pad and spreader, and workflow development to stack laminations upright, rotate them horizontally, and deposit them onto a conveyor. Maintained constant communication with Rex Power Magnetics to align technical solutions with operational needs.
